Ow. My brain hurts.

Whew.  Right now I barely have time to breathe, let alone blog.

My list of priorities goes like this:
Mom-ing
Schooling
Housework
Laundry
Sewing
Blogging.

Sorry - bottom of the list, but that's how it is at the moment.

I'm carving out these few minutes while I listen to my kiddos argue about, well, who-knows-what.  I can tell you they are not doing what they are supposed to be doing, which is getting their jammies on and hopping into bed for book-time.

Utterly frustrating.

Please don't get me wrong.  I love my children.  I adore them. I even like them.
Always have, always will.  But by golly they can be so utterly frustrating.
And wow, have I had a month.

My littlest is 6. She's very smart and tested into 1st grade in November.

This picture was taken about a month ago.  Goof-ball.

Very intelligent.  She's also only 6 years old.  So, I struggle with our expectations of her.  Is it unrealistic to expect her to wash her own hair?  How about putting her clothes away in the CORRECT drawer?
I try to think back to when the other two were six and its not really apples to apples, ya know?
She has been struggling with tummy pain.
We finally have an appointment to see a pediatric "tummy doctor" but not until May 1.
I know there are days when she hurts and doesn't tell me, and then there are the days when it hurts too much for her to go to school.  Hopefully, will will get it all figured out soon.

My middle one, my BOY.  and wow is he a boy.

taken at Christmas, my boy is on the right, his cousin on the left.

He totally reminds me of pigpen in the Peanuts cartoons.  He just steps outside and he's covered in dirt. He's growing out his hair, which adds to the shaggy messy look.
He also constantly is making noise - either sound effects or talking.
c-o-n-s-t-a-n-t-l-y.
I try really hard to not let it drive me batty.  But man, wow.
an hour in the car with him feels like, well, an hour. in a car.  with constant noises behind my seat.

Other than that he's pretty easy right now, but being the middle child and the only boy, we do try to make sure he feels special too.

My eldest.

chopped off all her hair, in February.

Man oh man.  She will be ten at the end of the month.  And the attitude has begun.  Snarky comments and back talking.  Currently, we're simply calling her on the attitude, telling her flat out when she's being disrespectful and rude. We're working on ways to treat her like she's 10 and not younger, like her sibs.  Tonight she made dinner - Mac & Cheese with Hot Dogs.

So totally normal family life, right?
Parenting seems to be taking more "time" lately.  For some reason they're rather high-maintenance at the moment.  But, I love being a mom.
I love being their mom.  Bring it on.
I love it more than fabric.

Add to that - I'm back to school.  I made it through my first term, yeah!
This new term is kicking my tail-feathers.  I'm taking Math, Chemistry and Soil Science.  Who's brilliant plan is was this?  So much left-brain use and little time for creativity.

And
 - wait -
our home computer decided it was done.

Blue screen of death and everything.

So, after weighing the pros and cons we got a slick new laptop.  Which is great, except I spent the last 3 days getting all the software, programs and files on the new one. Getting new technology is not fun and exciting when it is unplannned.

On the plus side - I did get the new photoshop elements.  I'd been using 2.0 and now I've got 10.  Whoo hoo, wow, totally awesome - if I could find time to play with it.  I also got a new-to-me "real" camera, on loan from a photographer friend, for me to try out.  Again, gotta find time to play with it.

Another plus -

I got my chickens!
Or at least the first of them.  We ended up at the Farm Store on Free Chick Day.
Free!  How could I not bring some home?
I'm expecting more chicks to arrive in a couple of weeks.  tee-hee!

About a month ago I did manage to finish my Carolina Christmas.
I gave up finding the perfect binding and went with what I had.

 So, chicks on quilts!

Now I need to go figure out "Sine & Cosine and Their Functions"

All really want it a nice tumbler of Irish Whiskey,*

whiskyla.com

Some cheesy chips, and an evening of NCIS.

tvbreakroom.com

*disclaimer - I rarely indulge, usually when I'm feeling like I need a nice treat.
Kinda like chocolate - only not really the same at all.

Meanwhile Back at the Ranch...

I'm not going to recap 2011.
I'd love to, but it would take a while, and I'm not up for that right now.  Instead, I'd like to share what's been going on around here.

The holidays were a wonderful time filled with family.
I've been busy keeping the kids busy, hence the lack of blogging.  It's last on the list of priorities.  I'm not apologizing, just explaining.

Sunrise from my living room.  Pretty isn't it?  One of the best changes to happen in the last year was our move.  I've never been happier.

The coming year holds a lot of changes for me.
Starting next week, I'm heading back to school.  I've enrolled in Oregon State University's Ecampus Horticulture Program.

why?

well, it was always the plan to find gainful employment or continue my education once all three kids were in school all day.  Muffin started the year in Kindergarten but at our request was evaluated and bumped up to First grade.  It is a much better fit for her, and she's having fun.
So, I was suddenly home most of the day without kids.

My ideas/thoughts/loose plans had to be moved up a year.
okay, that's why I'm going to school - but horticulture?

I grow roses, I have about 50 of them that I dug up and moved here.  I used to root cuttings and sell the baby roses online.  The stopped when we moved.

I have this dream of owning my own rose nursery.   Now I have the space to start that.  So, Horticulture.

So that's where I am.
I start with Chemistry and Math - and I'm pretty nervous.
Those aren't my strong areas and it's been awhile.  The program I'm in strongly suggests that these course be complete first, so here I go.

I've also confirmed my summer work as a Stage Manager for The Shedd, where I worked last summer.

I'll have less time for quilting.

I'd like to say I'm going to work of finishing my WIPs. But we'll see what happens.

I'm limiting myself to The Block Lotto and a single round robin swap, The Cotton Robin.

I'm horrible at keeping myself on a schedule, which I find hilarious, because I'm a good stage manager and 90% of that job required juggling a billion different schedules, and keeping track of them all.

So, if anyone has any tips for self-scheduling, I'd love to hear them.

Lego Party

My house looks like a fabric shop exploded, got run over by a mack truck full of Christmas and then 3 kids and a baby ran through it.
And I'm happy.

November and December are tough months for us, because Mr. Chaos is in and out of town with the Nutcracker.
He's in Idaho this week.
I think.
I know he started the week driving up to Pullman, Washingtion.
...
yup, I checked, the tour schedule says Idaho.

We also have 2 birthdays and Thanksgiving.

Hence the random silence on my part.

~ Today ~
I'm watching a friend's infant - 7 months old - part time while she goes to school.
So there's baby toys scattered around and bottles in my kitchen.

I was inspired by sophie to set up a bunch of tables and quilt last night, and didn't put anything away.

and I began to decorate for Christmas.

IMG_4445

I got my window lights up!

~ Rewind ~
I threw two totally awesome parties for Jack and Tess.
A Rapunzel party and a Lego party.

Lego Party first.

Saturday was Jack's Lego party, which was a huge success.

I made a Lego cake and everything.

lego cake

Simplest Party ever.

I pushed all our furniture against the walls to make a big open space.

lego table

I bought two boxes of basic Legos and  20 mini-packs of individual figures, set them out on a table
- I didn't bother with a tablecloth - they're boys, they don't care.

I thought the runner was festive enough.

and wham -   added the boys.

They built stuff and ran around, like boys do.
(One of the dads stayed, with his two older kids - a high schooler and a middle schooler - all three of them were playing with the legos too.)

When arguments started to break out
(if you put 12 8-year-old boys in the same room, they WILL argue)
it was cake time.

I scheduled the party from 3-4:30, which meant I didn't need to feed everyone.
(tee-hee, super sneaky me!)

punch

They had cake, ice cream and fruit punch or apple juice.
Paper plates and cups  - no dishes to clean!

When that was done, we did presents.
They all sat remarkable well while Jack read every card out loud and opened everything.

IMG_4411

Then they ran around and played until the parents showed up
(which wasn't very long at all)

Perfect timing.

Score Mom.

The best part?
Once everyone left clean up was super simple.
No mess, no fuss.

The kids spent the rest of the day playing with the new toys.
Jack got lots of legos and graciously chose to share with his sisters.

~At our house there are no "mines" but when you get a new toy,
you don't have to share on your first day.
works like a charm.
The siblings learn to be patient, knowing that they'll get to try the new stuff tomorrow.~

They played for hours.

smiley jack

I didn't even make him wash his face until bedtime.
Feed him Hawaiian Punch and he gets a red mustache.
every time.

Now he's eight.  EIGHT!
when did that happen?

What happened to my 3-year-old?

Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago today, surrounded by family and friends, Josh and I were married.

I can hardly believe it's been that long.
It tends to blur together, in a very happy way.

In the last 10 years, we've:
Owned 8 different vehicles
Moved 4 times
(I'm never moving again)
Had 3 kids
Both of us went back to school
(I finished an Associates degree)
(He completed Bachelor's degree)
Endured a decade of Nutcracker tours apart
Burned numerous dinners
Gone to breakfast more times than I can count

We've had our rough spots,
but
we've never gone to bed mad or upset
and neither one of us has ever slept on the couch.

Tonight we'll happily enjoy leftover pizza and a movie with the kids, who will be totally excited to tell us all about they're first day of school.

Our life is good.

and it's only gonna get better.

Still haven't found the Camera

Okay, so I'm still missing my camera.  I saw it.... somewhere.

We're making progress finding homes for all our stuff.
We have hi-speed internet - We went with a Verizon Mobile Hotspot.  Works pretty well, not as fast as cable, but I'm not gonna complain.

We're having an Open House-Warming in 2 weeks, so we're trying really hard to get everything unpacked and put away.  I'm excited to show off our new home and the surrounding piles of dirt!

I'm sorting through my crafting supplies.  It had been scattered around the old house, shoved into every nook and cranny.  Now that I have a room for sewing, I need to make it all fit in that room.  So, I'm going to have to get rid of some stuff.

Today's goal is to finish sorting the toys.  With 3 kids, all in different stages of playing, we've got a lot of toys. I'm getting rid of broken toys, and finding homes for everything.  It's been a task taking over two weeks, but I'm down to the final  couple of boxes.  I should be able to get through them today.
I've determined I HATE Polly Pockets.  Little Pets aren't much better.

School starts on Sept 7.
All three kids will go to the same school - a small K-8 about 10 miles down the road.
They're all totally excited.
The school does a staggered start, with 4-8 starting on the 7th, and K-3 on the 8th.  Muffin - who's starting kindergarten this fall  - is completely devastated that Miss Mae gets to go to school a whole day earlier.

Life is good.
Things are setting down.
I'm looking forward to September.

Pictures soon - I promise!

Thursday, August 11, 2011

wow.
It's been a while.
and I don't even have any pictures to show.

What have I been doing for the last 3 months?

When last we spoke I had just accepted a job stage managing a quick "in-concert" musical.
3 weeks of work.

That went great, and then they asked me to stage manage their big summer musical, which started rehearsing the day after the first show closed.
So, add 8 more weeks of work.  Yeah!
- our final performances are this weekend.

During all this, our new house got finished, and we packed everything up and moved.

I haven't touched my sewing machine since early July.
I think I'm going through withdrawls.
Our garage is still full of boxes waiting to be unpacked and I would feel totally guilty sewing before we were unpacked.

Oh, and last week our washer broke.\
It had had a very loud squeak for a LONG time.
Then, on Sunday it stopped spinning.
A very nice repair man came out and told me it needs a new transmission.  He got me a price for the part,  - almost $300 - but he said that I'd probably be better off buying a new one.

We're in the process of refinancing our construction loan into a mortage - and - as everyone knows, you're not supposed to make any big purchases during that time period.
So, we talked to our mortage broker - who is well aware that we have 3 small kids and that waiting a month to purchase a new washer is just not an option.

I spent time researching washers - and finally made a decision.
Of course, Mr. Chaos is working out of town this week.  My wonderful Dad is going to pick it up from Sears and install it tonight while he's baby-sitting my kids while I work.

Add to all of this the fact that hi-speed internet doesn't exist out here - I have to use the internet sharing feature on my phone - and there you have the reason for my long absence.

Hopefully, I'll find my camera soon so I can start showing off my wonderful new home.  Until then, know that I haven't fallen off the face of the earth - just relocated, and it's taking me a while to adjust.

:)

Knock Knock

Hear that?

it's opportunity knocking on my door.  Just when Mr. Chaos and I were trying to figure out how we were going to make ends meet this summer, a project presents itself.

Three weeks of work for me.
As a stage manager.

yeah!
If you'd like to know what a stage manager does, here's the Wikipedia definition.

I'll be working on The Shedd's production of Pal Joey.  The scheduling worked out beautifully, there are only a couple of nights that I'll need to find childcare.

Rehearsals start Tuesday.  and run 6-10:30 every night except Saturday.  So much for a relaxed June.  Oh well.  Now I'm playing catch up, trying to do all the prep work that I usually do in 3 weeks into 3 days.

The Important Stuff

Life here has been completely chaotic and stressful for the last month or so.  It just seems to be one thing after another and we haven't had much time the breathe.
Nothing devastating, just enough to disrupt normal life.

A friend recently asked how life was and I responded "life's great, but it totally sucks right now".

There are so many good things happening in my life right now, that even the biggest speed bumps seem smaller.

Not a lot of sewing going on here, just too busy maintaining my family.
I did manage to get a few bee blocks done and in the mail.

These are for Megan.

House for Megan

More Houses for Megan

Wonky houses
I am so tired of building wonky houses.
These turned out great and I had fun building them, but I'm ready to be done with houses.

The Important Stuff.
Kids.
Easter.
Good food and dresses and family and friends.

Easter was tiring, but the kids had fun.
Here's all six.

My three and my nieces.

IMG_3758
Hannah Mae, Jack, Tessa, Stella and the twins - Lucy and Olivia.

No, I didn't make the dresses, I just happened to find 5 of the same dresses in the right sizes.
at decent prices.
Do you know how hard it is to do that?

I couldn't pass it up.

Of course it was cold and rainy, but Easter is for sundresses!

We introduced the twins to chocolate fondue.

IMG_3771

I was in charge of dessert, and I wanted something easy.
I totally think it will become an annual tradition.
YUM.

Last but not least, I built a test block for my 3x6 bee this quarter.

3x6 test block

This one is for me.
I haven't been making one for myself, but I decided that since I make such cute blocks, I need to make one for me.

Didn't the picture turn out nice?
The rain and hail stopped long enough for me to dash outside and take a picture.

This one was a test, I ran into a few road bumps during the design and build, but I've got it down now.

Happiness to you.

I did it!

Well, I did it.

The sew night was scheduled from 6-9, so at about 4 I started getting nervous.
I couldn't decided which project to take with me.
I knew I should take bee blocks to work on, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to concentrate.
and what if they think my projects are lame?

In the end I took two different projects to work on, both were at the point of needing trimmed down and what-not.
no actual sewing.
I didn't want to take my machine in.

I decided it didn't matter what they thought, I would work on what I wanted to work on.  I wasn't going to try impress anyone, I was going to get out of the house and meet people who quilt in person.

I drove around the block at least twice before I had the courage to park.
Then I waited in the car for a bit.
Finally I gathered up my stuff and walked inside.

When I got there there were only two quilters there.
I'm horrible with names, but I recognised one of the ladies from the quilt shop.  Jessica, the president, wasn't there yet.

They were very nice and I sat down and took out my stuff.  I won't say I was relaxed, but I was enjoying the fact that I wasn't at home.

Eventually 2 other ladies and Jessica showed up.

I had fun.
I got all my boring marking and trimming done and it wasn't boring.
All of these ladies are completely different, but unlike the random quilters I run into when picking up quilting magazines or at JoAnn's, they were nice.
and welcoming.
and interested in what I was working on.

One of them, Debbie (?) was putting the binding on a beautiful circle quilt.  She insisted that the circles were easy, but I'm not sure I believe her.

I got my charm pack.

I think I know what I'm going to do.  I had it all planned and then I started changing my mind.

Here are the rules:
Robert Kaufman Solids Challenge guidelines:
1)A quilt top or quilt using only solid fabrics (the fabrics that you supply do not have to be Kona solids, but do need to be solids, not tone-on-tones or marbled)
2)Must use at least half of the charm pack colors (22 charms)
3)Top must be at least 36"X 36"
4)Tops/quilts ready for the July 13th meeting

I have two ideas I think I'd like to try, and I am working on samples of both.
When they're pieced I might ask for help deciding.

Would I go again?  yes

I wish I could make it to the meeting, but it's at the same time as Miss Mae's ballet class, so maybe I'll be able to make it this summer, when we're not doing ballet.

I took a chance and stepped outside my comfort zone.
and it was good.

Thursday

Sorry I've been gone so long.

Life Happened.

Anyway,
Today is Thursday, which is the most stressful day of the week.
Remember the twins, my nieces?
They turned one in January.

Any parent knows what this means - nothing is safe.

I do try to hide things.

A couple weeks ago one of them decided she didn't like the way my pink scraps were organized. (I think this is Olivia, but I'm not sure...)

Back to today.

On top of the normal stress,

My littlest has pneumonia.

AND

The ballet opens a new show in two days.
My WONDERFUL husband came home for two hours so I could finish the costumes that HAVE to be on dancers at 3pm.

AND

we're trying to get started on the site prep for our new home.

STRESSFUL.
CRAZY.

Today my darling nieces had me laughing so hard I was crying.

Literally.

Let me 'splain.

After lunch I decided that I liked them contained in their booster seats.

So I set up a coloring station.

They had fun.

Then Lucy decided to put the crayon on her head.

She put it one her head, rolled her hair in it and pulled it forward.

It took me a few minutes to figure out what she was doing, but when I did, I laughed so hard I cried.

She was curling her hair.

Lucy was mimicking her mommy.

OH

MY

GOODNESS!!

I feel much better now.

bring it on,
i'm ready.

Isn't it amazing the way that little ones can make everything better?

And....there went February.

italian jar

The last two weeks I have done almost no sewing.

First, my Mr. was out of town with the Ballet, which left me tired at the end of the day with no energy for sewing.
Then, as soon as he returned, Muffin got sick and shared the sore-throat-achey-body-exhausted-hacking-cough with me.
Also, the weather took a random turn for the worse and we had a snow day
(we NEVER have snow days this late in February)

Have you ever tried doing anything remotely productive with a cold and cooped up children?

Temperatures are still barely over freezing.
We're just now getting over the yuckiness, although I'm still coughing.

Blargh.

We did manage to finally close on the property we're buying.
whoo hoo!

Mr Chaos left again today for a week of touring with the Ballet.
I doubt much sewing will be done this week.

I have costumes for the next show to sort through and catalog.
(we're renting the costumes and they didn't come with an inventory.)

I've been playing with my graph paper and quilty ideas, and some of them actually look nice!
But, I'm sticking to my guns and not starting any new full size projects until I finish something.

I've just got the hand sewing of the binding left on the Erik Homemade Mystery Quilt.
maybe tonight?

I'm feeling a serious lack of motivation today.
 (can you tell?)

Hopefully I'll have something original whipped up and ready share in the next month.

Why?

Why is it that you only seem to run into people you haven't seen in years when you're not at your best?

This weekend I was in total sleep-deprived mom-mode.

You know
we've all been there
just hopping in the car to run a quick errand.

 - no contacts, no make-up, over sized really worn sweatshirt, comfy jeans, I might have brushed my hair that morning...

I dropped of Miss Mae at Jazz class and drove around with the sick kiddos for an hour.
No point in going home, we'd just have to turn around as soon as we got home.

I popped into my LQS to get these:

not because I needed them, but because I needed a bit of retail therapy.

I ran into an old friend I haven't seen in over 10 years.

She knew me when I looked like this

Yup, purple hair.

Not that I was trying to impress her, but man, I looked like total crud.

Oh well.

The retail therapy was definitely needed.

Friday Night Sew In Results

...or lack there of.

Yup.  I did not do I single bit of sewing last night.

I had it all planned.  It was gonna be great.

Redboxed 3 movies for the kids.

(Inkheart is a great family movie.
It doesn't hurt that Brendan Frazier is easy on the eyes.)
Half way through the movie, Muffin asked if she can bring her blankie out.
(She's 5, which means that her blankie needs to live on her bed, and she can have it at bedtime.)

I looked up from the dishes and saw that she was flushed.

Warning signs.
*sigh*
sick kiddo.

Yup.  no sewing.
I can't listen for her with the sewing machine running.
all my plans washed away.

But...

It wasn't a total loss.

I opened the box that had arrived earlier.

open box

removed the paper and....

open box (2)

12 lbs of fabric.

I ordered this grab bag from The Fat Quarter Shop.
It was on sale and I had a coupon code!
I hadn't ordered their grab bag before and I was totally stoked and excited to see what happiness had arrived.

The iron doesn't make any noise.

So, I touched, petted, ironed, measured and folded every bit of fabric in the box.

ocd list

and yes, I am that OCD.
I measured and made a list of every bit in the box.
(I wanted to know how much yardage and my overall price per yard.)

The dryer just buzzed.
The contents of the box will have to be in another post.

Excited Much?

Is it wrong to be jump-up-and-down, squealing, can't-contain-it excited about a box?

Of course, the twins are here, so I really shouldn't open it until they go home...

I don't think I can wait.

(and, yes.  i did actually squeal.)

Teach Your Children Well

Disclaimer:  This post has nothing to do with quilting, costuming or crafting.

A couple of days ago my youngest, who's five, and I were sitting at the table.  She was coloring in her princess coloring book and I was doing costuming paperwork

She sighed and commented that it was too bad that girls couldn't marry girls, because she really loved her sister.

I put down my pencil and thought for a moment.
She's at the point were simple answers are best, and Mr. Chaos and I strive to be truthful with our kids.

Me:  Well Muffin, some girls do love girls, and some boys do love boys.

Muffin:  Really?

Me:  Yup.  there are different types of love.  I love your Aunt Emmy very much, and she is my sister.  The same way you love your sister and brother.  But,  I love Daddy is a completely different way.

Muffin:  Huh?

Me:  When you are a grown-up there are different kinds of love.  There are some girls who love girls the way I love Daddy, and some boys who love boys the way I love Daddy.

Muffin:  Who will I love?

Me:  You will love whoever you want to, and when you're a grown-up you will know who you love.

Muffin:  okay.

that was it.
she continued coloring and I sat there and watched her for a moment.

It was one of the proudest moment of my parenting life.

I know this post is completely different than anything else on this blog, but acceptance is important.

I want my children to know I will love them always.
Who they chose to love will not change that.

regardless of your personal feelings, you decide what to teach your children.
I choose to teach my children acceptance.

2010 Finishes - Big and Small

Looking back, 2010 was the year I really got into quilting.

Last year I finished 9 crib size or larger quilts.  The details for each are listed on my Big Finished Quilts page.

I also made:

I'm pretty sure there are a few small 'uns I forgot to photo, but overall, it was a productive year.
Much more positive to look at what I did finish than what I didn't get done.

What does 2011 hold for me, sewing-wise?

More finishes, less new projects.  I've told myself that I can start a new project when  I finish two older projects.  Wanna see my UFO list?
  1. String X's
  2. Muffin's Trip Around the World
  3. Carolina Christmas II
  4. Tic-Tac Toe
  5. Sew Buzzy Stars
  6. Ravishing in Red
  7. Alice in Wonderland
  8. Crazy Mom Quilts Quilt Along #5
  9. Double Wedding Ring Tree Skirt
  10. Pure Hexagons
  11. ColorWheel Geese
  12. Em's Halloween Runner
  13. Cool Braids
  14. Harry Potter
Some of these are pieced tops, ready to be quilted.
Some are blocks from bees, just waiting to be sashed and set...gonna design settings though...
Some have half the blocks pieced...
you get the picture.

We will be moving this summer and I REALLY don't want to pack half finished projects...

I think I'll post this list in the sidebar.  Might help me make some progress on it.  Kind of overwhelming at the moment.

Know what else this means?  I'm limiting my bees and swaps.
Right now I'm part of 8 different bees.

Too Many.

My life has gotten much crazier than when I signed up for them.

Sew Bee It
Bee Improvisational

I wanna sew more with my kiddos.
I wanna sew stuff for my new house.

Yuck, Yuck, Yucky

I've been dealing with kindey stones for the last eight days.
oh.
my.
goodness.

painful.

No sewing has been done.
No costuming has been done.

a lot of sleeping has been done.

I have the bestest husband in the whole world.
he has been taking awesome care of me and the kiddos.

I'm drinking a lot of fluid and hoping it will pass soon.

sorry of the delay in the rest of the quilting reveals.

best use of a quilt

Where's the baby you ask?

Baby A is pulling all the dish towels out of the drawer (which is why they are in the bottom drawer)
Baby B is trying to figure out what the heck a potato masher is for (again stored in a bottom drawer on purpose)
